The General Service Medal 1962 - 2007 is commonly known as the Campaign Service Medal 1962 as was awarded with a minimum of one campaign clasp (in the instance 'Air Operations Iraq') and it is believed that a maximum of six clasp have been awarded on one medal

The lower limb of the medal is engraved with the year of issue and subsequent awards are denoted by adding a 2nd award bar to the ribbon

which resembled a large penny

and RAF in recognition of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy in the air

It was later made available to equivalent ranks in the Royal Navy (RN) and Army for acts of gallantry in the air

including people whose work has made them known nationally in their chosen area
