Conspicuous Gallantry Medal QVOriginally established in 1855 to reward naval gallantry in the Crimea. The original medals used the MSM with the words Meritorious Service removed and "Conspicuous Gallantry" engraved in their place. Only 11 awards of this type were made and the medal fell into disuse. It was revived for the Ashantee wars of 1874 and a new die was commissioned so the words Conspicuous Gallantry were now raised in the striking. Originally the ribbon was three equal

naval personnel and civilians who demonstrated exceptional courage during maritime rescue operations

Nurses were awarded the medal without clasp regardless of whether their service would have qualified them for any

the colours of the five Olympic Rings and representing the five continental regions of the world

or in direct support of operations conducted by NATO in the Former Yugoslavia

along with an official certificate of entitlement

The Edward Medal was discontinued in 1971
