Distinguished Flying CrossThe Distinguished Flying Cross was established for Officers and Warrant Officers of the RAF for acts of valour against the enemy whilst in the air. The 'DFC' is issued unnamed however WW2 issues were engraved with the year of issue on the lower limb of the cross.

It is at a level below the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross and is at the equivalent level to the Distinguished Service Cross (for exemplary gallantry at sea) and the Distinguished Flying Cross (for exemplary gallantry in the air)

Specially approved civilian categories who served with the Army in the operational areas providing they wore the approved uniform of their organisation and belonged to:- SSAFA Nursing Service

Overseas non-operational in an area deemed to be closely threatened or subject to air attack -180 days

this award was originally known as the Conspicuous Service Cross and was issued for gallantry in presence of the enemy to warrant and subordinate officers of the RN who were ineligible (on account of their rank) for the Distinguished Service Order

transport and other non-combat aviation duties
